“Legion” Season 3 Episodes 1 & 2 Review by Brooke Daugherty

Noah Hawley is in pure form in the season opener to the final season of Legion. If you loved the insanity of the first two seasons, you should watch this episode now. If you haven’t watched the previous two series, head over to Hulu and check it out. This show has action, a little body horror, superhuman powers, and even a bit of romance. Minor spoilers ahead.
We begin the season with a new character instead of David Haller or even a Summerland or Division 3 regular. We meet a young woman who we find out has time travelling abilities and a mostly absentee father. She receives the name “Switch” from one of David’s associates and begins introducing herself as such. We see her time travel world and delve into David’s new world he has created for people to find peace. Apparently part of that is a lunchbox with David’s face painted on the side I was coveting. This episode was directed by Andrew Stanton, the same one who has written and directed many Pixar movies. It is a shame this is the last season as I’d love to see what else he could do with this story.
I noticed a few possible Easter Eggs linking Legion to X-Men: Legacy. At one point, we see two Davids again with one American and the other Scottish instead of the established English Rational Mind David, possibly an homage to Haller’s Scottish comic rearing. The psychedelic scenery in this episode when David is introduced could be a nod to the Psychosphere, or “Dream-Plane”, which is more or less a bright colored comic version of the TV astral plane. With the introduction of time travelers, we might also see an augmented version of David’s The Weaver personality.
Episode 2 has Division 3 on the lookout for David and company. We see most of the main players in this episode. There is a great scene where Lenny is the Mad Hatter and Kerry Loudermilk comes out with a samurai sword fulfilling the badass reputation she has. She doesn’t get to really fight as much as I hoped, but we do get to see her dance with the other Cary in a fabulous dream sequence.
We see in the scene’s from upcoming episodes that David meets his father. Others may recognize his father from Game of Thrones, but I know Harry Lloyd from Doctor Who. He has a range and I can’t see what he has in store for Xavier.
Legion has gone above and beyond for Fox’s Mutants in three years compared to the 20 years of X-Men movies. The surreal, weird, and creepy vibe makes it a show I go back to and this final season appears to be the same.
